Facts of Lice Treatment
Treatment for head lice is recommended for persons diagnosed with an active infestation. All household members and other close contacts should be checked. Lotions and shampoos containing 1% permethrin (Nix) are an OTC option (but rarely kill all the bugs) They can be bought at the store without a prescription.
Head lice do not go away by themselves: treatment is necessary. Head lice do not survive long if they fall off a person and cannot feed.
